Rand casino play: what shifts when the whole cashier speaks ZAR

Lists of 'casinos that take rand' mix two different things. Some sites accept a rand payment and convert it on arrival into the currency the account is held in. A true ZAR casino holds the account itself in rand, so the amount you pay in is the amount you play with.

To tell them apart before you register, read the banking page and the terms. If the minimum deposit, the bonus caps and the withdrawal limits are printed as rand amounts, and the sign-up form offers ZAR as the account currency, it is a rand casino. Dollar figures with a rand equivalent in brackets mean it is not.

Playing in rand removes the exchange step inside the casino. It does not remove every cost or every rule:

• Bitcoin steps outside the rand. Paying in or out by Bitcoin means converting between rand and Bitcoin at an exchange, at that exchange's rate and fees. The casino balance stays in rand; your wallet does not.
• Wagering is the same amount of play in any currency. A R1,500 bonus is easier to picture than one in dollars, but 30x the deposit plus the bonus still has to be bet before it can be withdrawn. T&Cs9 October
• The caps still apply. Withdrawal limits are rand figures too, so paying in rand does not lift the weekly ceiling.
• It is still spending. Seeing amounts in your own currency makes the cost of play clearer; it does not make it smaller.
